The Waterfalls of Green

The Cascate del Verde (Green Waterfalls) are located at 800 metres in the municipality of Borrello in the province of Chieti and descend for two hundred metres with three distinct drops offering a majestic and fascinating spectacle. The water rushes thunderously down the sheer rock walls surrounded by vegetation that grows luxuriantly thanks to the combination of favourable exposure and humidity.

Holm oaks dominate here, but there are also other species that love mild temperatures, while the rock walls, made constantly damp by the water spray, are covered with a mantle of moss.
In some of the surrounding, somewhat cooler areas, typical mountain species such as beech and silver fir grow. The waterfalls are fed by the Rio Verde, which boasts water of an exceptional quality as evidenced by the rich fauna, especially aquatic insects.

All around fly the water blackbird and the yellow wagtail, species that are very sensitive to pollution and are only found along mountain streams. Birds of prey dominate, the buzzard and sparrow hawk, but also the peregrine falcon and the red kite.

In the dense vegetation along the Rio Verde and in the surrounding woods, it is possible to encounter skunks and wildcats, now rare species. It is therefore a corner of the world where nature has preserved intact some of its treasures in all its magnificence.
