Colonnella: a terrace overlooking the sea

Perched on a hill, it offers the very best of Abruzzo: the greenery of the countryside, the azure blue of the sea, the backdrop of the mountains

It is not by chance that in 1797 Lorenzo Giustiniani already described Colonnella as follows: “The air one breathes is very healthy and the town enjoys a surprising panorama, overlooking much of the Papal State” in his "Dizionario Geografico ragionato del Regno di Napoli", and today it is the same. Standing on a hill near the coast, the small town enjoys an enviable position: from here the view stretches freely from the sea to the Gran Sasso, Sybilline and Majella mountains, across gentle rolling hills offering every tone of green.

Strolling through the narrow streets of Colonnella is always a pleasure. The medieval town centre is reached via a long stairway, leading up to the 14th century clock tower, which dominates the town and can be seen from far away. Then there are a succession of interweaving alleys and small squares, overlooked by buildings and churches recounting the long historyImage of Colonnella, starting from the ancient town of Truentum, described by Pliny the Elder, and stretching through the centuries.  The Roman cisterns and the church of Saints Cipriano and Giustina, constructed between the end of the 18th century and the beginning of 19th century, with its wooden statue of the Our Lady of Suffrage and the precious 27 pipe organ made in 1833, should not be missed. Palazzo Marzii (16th century) and the 18th century Palazzo Pardi are also worth a visit.

Furthermore, Colonnella, like the rest of Abruzzo, is the home of good cooking and good wine. It is impossible to resist the typical regional dishes and wines such as Montepulciano, Trebbiano and Passerina.

Most of the events animating the summer are also dedicated to food and festivities, with a succession of appointments representing an extra reason to visit this small gem of a town.
