Roccascalegna Castle

Standing on a rocky spur, it dominates the Sangro Valley
ImageThe view of the Roccascalegna Castle is impressive as it stands on the rocky spur overlooking the Rio Secco Valley, the Sangro Valley and the medieval town beneath, which it takes its name from. It probably dates back to the V-VI century, and is linked to the history of the Longobards who built the original fortifications. While the first written testimony about the Roccascalegna feud are later, around 1058 when it is mentioned in the Catalogus Baronum, the castle’s Longobard origins are widely accepted.
It has belonged to various families over the centuries, until the Nanni-Croce family who kept the castle throughout the 19th century up to 1980, when they donated it to the Council.
The castle has obviously been changed over the centuries, but still maintains the original irregular floor plan, which follows the rocks it is built on, and the powerful boundary walls on top of the sheer cliff.
Various restoration works haveImage helped to conserve the building, especially the important work that was concluded in 1996 and allowed opening it to the public.
Roccascalegna Castle has its own personal charm: visitors who go over the swing bridge into the distant medieval atmosphere have a truly unique experience.
